Recreation on Congamond Lakes
Not to worry, there is plenty to do away from the lake as well. Take a ride or walk on the bike trail, hike through the cross country trails and wildlife area. Don’t forget to bring your camera. All are great places for birdwatching and occasional wildlife. Or go on horseback from one of the local boarding stables. Maybe a riding lesson?
In the mood to golf? There are several public golf courses as well as a disc golf range.
Or just enjoy listening to the peace and quiet of your own backyard.

Southwick is convenient to Hartford, major highways, Bradley International Airport, and is located between Boston and New York City.
The three lakes, North, Middle and South ponds stocked twice a year are home to year round fishing and seasonal boating. Congamond has been home to several bass fishing tournaments and is a favorite spot for ice fishing as well. With two boat launches busy from spring to fall, you can float around the lake on a pontoon, paddle in your kayak or paddleboard, or zip along in a jet ski or motorboat. Or just sit in the gazebo at the town dock and watch the world go by. Grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants. Listen to one of your favorite local bands on or off the water.

History
As well as the annual town fireworks, there are numerous other fun filled events happening throughout the year including achili making contest, cardboard boat races, bass fishing derby, and several motocross events including the AMA Motocross Nationals.
The town was originally settled because of its rich farmlands. In the 1700’s there was a border dispute with Connecticut, and eventually Southwick claimed the area known as “The Jog” which is the southernmost point of Massachusetts.
Prior to electric refrigerators, ice was collected from Congamond Lakes and stored in blocks in massive ice houses to be delivered by railing for food storage from Boston to New York City.
